Why a Tooth Extraction May Be Necessary

When plaque and tartar aren’t regularly removed, they can lead to cavities and, over time, allow bacteria to infect the pulp of the tooth. In many cases, a root canal can resolve the issue, but if the damage is too severe, saving the tooth may not be possible, and an extraction may be required.

Tooth extractions might also be necessary in cases of traumatic oral injuries or when baby teeth block the proper eruption of adult teeth. Additionally, some orthodontic treatments may require removing a tooth to create the necessary space for proper alignment.

Wisdom teeth are another common reason for extraction, as they often lead to a variety of oral health problems. No matter the reason, our goal is to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible while prioritizing your overall health and wellbeing.

Knockout Tooth

If you’ve had a tooth completely knocked out due to an accident or trauma, quick action is critical to increase the chances of saving it. First, call your dentist immediately to inform them of the situation and your arrival. Locate the tooth as quickly as possible and handle it carefully. Always hold the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface) and avoid touching the root to prevent further damage.

Gently rinse the tooth with water if it’s dirty, but do not scrub it. If possible, try to place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place with gauze. If reinserting the tooth isn’t an option, preserve it by placing it in a glass of milk, a saline solution, or between your cheek and gum. Avoid storing the tooth in water, as this can harm the root cells and reduce the chances of successful reattachment.

Time is of the essence—seek professional care as soon as possible to maximize the likelihood of saving your tooth.

Pain in Your Gums or Other Soft Tissues

Not all dental emergencies are sudden; some develop gradually, making them harder to notice until the pain becomes severe. Swelling, tenderness, or pain in your gums is often a sign of gum disease but may also indicate a more serious issue, such as an infection or abscess.

Gum infections and abscesses can arise quickly, causing significant discomfort and potential complications if left untreated. Like a toothache, any sore or abscess in your mouth should be addressed immediately to prevent the infection from spreading and to protect your oral and overall health.

Lost Filling or Crown

Losing a filling or crown is typically not a dental emergency, but addressing it promptly is important to avoid further damage to the exposed tooth. Without the protection of the filling or crown, the underlying tooth is highly sensitive and can cause discomfort when exposed to pressure, temperature changes, or air.

If you still have the dislodged filling or crown, clean it thoroughly and try to temporarily place it back on your tooth using dental cement, denture adhesive, or even Vaseline. Avoid using household glue, as it can be toxic and unsafe for your mouth.

Once you visit your dentist, they will securely replace the crown or filling—or create a new one if necessary—restoring your tooth’s function and comfort.
