Tooth Extractions

At our clinic, we’re dedicated to preserving your natural teeth whenever possible. However, there are times when a dental emergency may necessitate the removal of a tooth or multiple teeth to protect your overall health and wellbeing. In such cases, extracting one tooth can often help save the rest.

If an extraction is required, our team will take every measure to ensure the process is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Additionally, we’ll work with you to provide a high-quality tooth replacement, if needed, to restore your smile promptly and effectively.

Why a Tooth Extraction May Be Necessary

When plaque and tartar aren’t regularly removed, they can lead to cavities and, over time, allow bacteria to infect the pulp of the tooth. In many cases, a root canal can resolve the issue, but if the damage is too severe, saving the tooth may not be possible, and an extraction may be required.

Tooth extractions might also be necessary in cases of traumatic oral injuries or when baby teeth block the proper eruption of adult teeth. Additionally, some orthodontic treatments may require removing a tooth to create the necessary space for proper alignment.

Wisdom teeth are another common reason for extraction, as they often lead to a variety of oral health problems. No matter the reason, our goal is to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible while prioritizing your overall health and wellbeing.

The Extraction Process

To ensure your comfort, anesthesia will be administered to numb the tooth and surrounding tissue. For patients with heightened dental anxiety, IV sedation or general anesthesiology may also be recommended. Once you’re fully comfortable, the dentist will use specialized forceps to gently grasp the tooth and carefully rock it back and forth to loosen it for removal. In some cases, the tooth may need to be extracted in pieces, particularly if it is impacted, which might also require the removal of some gum or bone tissue.

After the extraction, it’s normal to experience some bleeding in the socket. You’ll be asked to bite down on a gauze pad to promote clot formation and stop the bleeding. Stitches may also be placed to close the site and protect against infection. These are often self-dissolving and will naturally disappear once they’ve fulfilled their purpose.

Aftercare for a Tooth Extraction

Recovery from a tooth extraction typically takes a few days. While your dentist will provide specific aftercare instructions tailored to your needs, here are some general guidelines to ensure a smooth healing process:

  • Apply an ice pack to the affected area to minimize swelling. Use it in 10-minute intervals as needed.

  • Allow yourself at least 24 hours to rest, avoiding strenuous activity for the first couple of days.

  • Avoid using a straw on the first day, as the suction can disrupt clot formation. Stick to soft foods like soup or applesauce and gradually reintroduce solid foods as you heal.

  • Refrain from using tobacco products, as they can interfere with the healing process.

  • Take any prescribed pain medication as directed to manage discomfort effectively.
